Worth the Watch: Trevor Junior Varsity Sports

Many Trevor students attend school athletic events, but the reality is that most events with packed stands are varsity games. And while Trevor’s varsity players are extremely talented and exciting to watch, all of those players started somewhere. For many of them, that “somewhere” was Junior Varsity (JV). I myself have witnessed the development of JV players firsthand; I have been a part of five JV teams in my first three seasons of high school. Many of my JV teammates have gone on to play on varsity teams, sometimes as starters. I spoke to one teammate, Ethan C. ‘28, about his experience on the JV soccer team:

“I feel like I took [JV] for granted a little bit. While I was there, I was like, ‘I want to be on varsity’ until I realized, ‘Wow, JV is really fun.’ You know, I got to play a lot.” Ethan reflects, “It was a great experience… it helped me gain my confidence, and overall just made my game a lot better and prepared me for my future.”

JV teams equip student athletes with the skills they need for future success, but JV isn’t solely about improving; it’s also about winning. This year, Trevor’s JV soccer team had an outstanding season. They went undefeated for the majority of the season, until their last two league games. Led by their captains and a group of talented freshmen, the team entered the NYCAL playoffs as the #3 seed. After a devastating loss to Columbia Prep in the semifinals, Trevor walked away from an otherwise-fantastic season empty-handed. But they did gain an incredible experience.

As winter athletics begin, a new set of JV teams starts their season. The Boys' JV Basketball and Girls' JV Basketball teams are both preparing for their three-month-long seasons. Charlie G. ‘28, a prominent player on the Boys JV Basketball team, says that the group “has the potential to be the best JV team in NYCAL, but it’s going to take a lot of work.” He “wants the team to have a winning record.”

Both of Trevor’s JV Basketball teams will be playing numerous games this season in the third-floor gym. This is a message to all Trevor students, athletes or not: go to JV games!
